Government Policy about
Topographic Maps
As you may know, the federal Government had previously announced that
would stop producing printed topographic maps.
We are delighted to announce that Mr Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural
Resources has announced that he has reversed the decision of his predecessor,
and will keep The Canada Map Office open to ensure the ongoing supply of
printed maps for Canadians. M.P. Pierre Lemieux stood up in the House of
Commons in late November and made the announcement to all the Members. It is
unusual for government to reverse a decision but this was brought about by a
strong campaign of letters and e-mails to the Minister and individual MPs,
spearheaded by map librarian Heather McAdam. Heather, with the support of all
of us, is now pushing the Minister to get our topographic map system up-dated
and restore Canada's position as the world's leading cartographer.
There is now a campaign encouraging the government to devote funds to
update the topographic map database.
